ACHA Division 3 Men's Hockey Championships Preview

The third-ranked Hope College men's hockey team's final skate at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 3 National Championships will start with some familiar rivals.

The Flying Dutchmen, who are moving up to the ACHA Division 1 level next season, face two Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference West Division rivals in pool play this week in St. Louis, Missouri: Michigan State University and Grand Valley State University.

Hope will also play Dordt University (Iowa) during pool play at the Centene Community Ice Center NHL Rink. The team with the best pool play record will advance to the national semifinals on Friday, March 21.

The Flying Dutchmen enter the 2025 ACHA Championships with a 31-3-1 record as the MCHC Vezina Cup champions.

Led by head coach Chris Van Timmeren, Hope seeks a fourth ACHA Division 3 national title. The Flying Dutchmen previously won in 2022, 2021, and 2018 and finished national runner-up in 2023, 2014, 2011, 2010 and 2003.

Hope is led by two skaters who made the six-player ACHA All-Athletic First Team: junior defenseman Austin Ieuter (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow HS) and junior center Jake Onstott (Zeeland, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central).

On Tuesday, March 18, the Flying Dutchmen open pool play against Michigan State at 8 p.m. Central.

Hope is 3-0 against the Spartans this season: winning, 3-1, in the Vezina Cup quarterfinals on March 1 in Grand Rapids and twice during the regular season: 3-0 on the road on Oct. 26 and 4-1 on home ice on Oct. 25.

On Wednesday, March 19, Hope skates against Dordt at 6:15 p.m. Central. The two teams last met in 2022, with Hope winning, 14-0.

On Thursday, March 20, the Flying Dutchmen face GVSU at 5 p.m. Central.

Hope split the season series with the Lakers, losing, 3-0, on the road on Feb. 1, but winning, 4-2, on home ice on Jan. 31 and clinching the MCHC West Division 3 title.
