Women's Lacrosse Heats Up on the Beach, Wins First Game in Florida

The Hope College women's lacrosse team brought the heat to Panama City Beach on Tuesday night in Florida.

The Flying Dutch fired up quickly, scoring nine consecutive times during the first half and roaring to a 17-7 victory against Nazareth College (New York) at the "Spring Fling" tournament at Publix Park.

Hope (3-3) answered a Nazareth goal 3 minutes, 10 seconds into the first quarter with nine of its own from five different Flying Dutch for a 9-1 lead with 8:46 remaining in the second quarter.

Nazareth, from the Empire 8 Conference, never pulled closer than six goals the rest of the way. It was the first meeting between the two teams.

Junior midfielder Stella Bottum (Alto, Michigan / Caledonia HS) and junior attacker Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) shared game-high honors with four goals apiece.

Brown, Hope's leading goal scorer with 24 on the season, scored the Flying Dutch's first two goals against Nazareth (3-4).

Junior midfielder Sydney LaPrairie (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek) chipped in three goals, two of which extended Hope's lead to 4-1 during the first quarter.

Junior midfielder Caleigh Randall (Lansing, Michigan / DeWitt) and freshman attacker Madison Pyle (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) added two goals apiece.

Randall also scooped up a team-best seven ground balls.

Junior goalkeeper Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana / Westfield) made six saves while playing all but the final two minutes.

Hope's next game is Thursday, March 20, at 7 p.m. Central vs. Endicott College (Massachusetts) in Panama City Beach.
