Crew of 13 Goal Scorers Lifts Men's Lacrosse Past Southwestern

The Hope College men's lacrosse team took an all-hands-on-deck approach to fend off some Pirates.

The Flying Dutchmen defeated Southwestern University (Texas), 19-11, on Saturday at Calvin University behind a crew of 13 different goal scorers.

Hope extended its winning streak to a season-high three games. The Flying Dutchmen evened their record to 4-4.

Senior attacker Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern HS) led Hope with two goals and two assists.

Five of Bowen's teammates chipped in two goals apiece: senior midfielder David Brace (Plymouth, Michigan / Plymouth), senior midfielder Jackson Early (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing), senior midfielder Freddy Kopplow (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Saint Francis), senior midfielder Andrew Lanham (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) and senior attacker Nick McCreery (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford).

The Flying Dutchmen jumped to a 7-3 first-quarter lead after a two-minute run of goals from Lanham, senior midfielder Blaine Hynde (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer) and McCreery.

Southwestern (4-2) charged back in the second quarter, striking four times to pull within 8-7 at halftime. Matthew Houtz scored two of his game-high four goals to start the rally.

Hope steadied the ship, ripping off six consecutive goals over the final 5 minutes, 12 seconds of the third quarter for a 15-8 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.

Junior Jack Balmforth (Livonia, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) made nine saves for the Flying Dutchmen in 51-plus minutes in goal.

Hope's next game is Wednesday, March 26, at 4 p.m. vs. Northland College (Wisconsin) at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
