Women's Track and Field Wins Two Events at Emory Spring Break Classic

Hope also set a school record in the 4x100 relay

Distance runner Laura Taylor and sprinter Sara Schermerhorn both clocked first-place efforts during the Emory University Spring Break Classic this weekend in Atlanta, Georgia.

Taylor (Yorkville, Illinois / Yorkville HS) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase during the two-day, non-scoring meet. The senior topped a field of eight runners with a time of 11 minutes, 59.49 seconds.

Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) topped a 121-runner field in the 200 meters by posting a time of 24.67 seconds. Teammate Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids) took 10th in the 200 at 26.25.

Hope also recorded Top-5 performances in the 400-meter relay and the 400 meters.

In the 4x100 relay, the Flying Dutch set a school record. Junior Ava Schmidt (Saline, Michigan / Saline), Leahy, freshman Sofia Fisher (Lombard, Illinois / Montini Catholic) and Schermerhorn clocked a fourth-place time of 47.46 seconds.

The relay, which ranks fifth in NCAA Division III, topped the 2023 Hope mark of 47.72 set by Schmidt, Schermerhorn, Helen Dodge and Grace Behrens.

In the 400 meters, junior Molly Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South) placed fourth at 2:19.43. Sophomore Amanda Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) clocked a fifth-place 2:20.44.

The Flying Dutch finished in the Top 10 in two more events.

In the shot put, junior Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) took ninth out of 69 competitors with a toss of 11.91 meters (39 feet, 1 inch).

In the high jump, sophomore Bridget Crombie (Lansing, Michigan / Home School) cleared 1.50 meters (4-11) for 10th place.

Hope finished 11th in four events.

In the pole vault, sophomore Abigail Cumings (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) placed 11th after clearing the bar at 2.85 meters (9-4 ¼).

In the 400 hurdles, Durow took 11th at 1:06.95.

In the 5,000-meter open, senior Isabella Brady (Zionsville, Indiana / Zionsville) clocked an 11th-place time of 20:09.07.


In the 100 meters, Schermerhorn finished 11th at 12.15 seconds.

The Flying Dutch's next meet is Friday-Saturday, April 4-5, at the Grand Valley State University Early Meet in Allendale.
