Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Greg Chandler

Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 24 Chicago

The Hope College women's lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak snapped Friday night as the Flying Dutch fell to No. 24-ranked University of Chicago, 21-9, at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hope slipped to 6-5 with the loss, while the Maroons raised their record to 10-4.

Chicago scored the game's first four goals before the Flying Dutch responded with two goals by junior midfielder Stella Bottum (Alto, Michigan/Caledonia HS) to cut the Maroons' lead to 4-2 midway through the first quarter. Chicago then scored five of the next six goals to take a 9-3 lead after the first 15 minutes.

Hope battled back early in the second quarter, taking scoring on three consecutive player-up opportunities – two goals by junior attacker Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Forest Hills Central) and one by Bottum – to pull to within 9-6 four-and-a-half minutes into the quarter.

However, the Maroons scored the next four goals to take a 13-7 halftime lead, then broke the game open with five unanswered tallies to start the second half to activate the running clock.

Julia Brown scored four goals to lead the Flying Dutch, while Bottum added three and senior attacker Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana/Mishawaka Penn) two. Senior attacker Kerrigan Brown (DeWitt, Michigan/DeWitt) had three assists.

Junior goalkeeper Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana/Westfield) tied a season-high with 14 saves in the cage for Hope.

Nine different players scored for Chicago, led by Evalina Swigart and Peyton McGuire with four goals apiece.

Hope is back in action Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m. at Alma College.
