Sara Schermerhorn Clocks Two of the Top 20 Sprints in the Nation at GVSU Al Owens Classic

Hope College sprinter Sara Schermerhorn sprinted away two of the fastest 200- and 400-meter times of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field season on Saturday.

The junior from Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City Central HS) posted the nation's fourth-fastest run at 55.02 seconds and topped a field of 21 runners at Grand Valley State University's Al Owens Classic. Schermerhorn placed third among sprinters from NCAA Divisions II and III, and the NAIA.

Schermerhorn came within .04 of her school record.

In the 200 meters, Schermerhorn posted the 12th-fastest run in the nation with a winning and season-best time of 24.45 seconds.

On Saturday, junior Molly Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South) recorded a PR run of 2:16.61, taking third in a field of 54.

Durow also placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:08.02.

In the high jump, senior Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) tied for seventh after clearing 1.53 meters (5-0 ¼).

In the 5,000 meters, junior Alexis Deighan (Birmingham, Michigan / Seaholm) clocked a PR run of 18:26.03 to place ninth.

On Friday, junior Elliana Johnson (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) placed fourth in the triple jump by recording a season-best leap of 10.42 meters (34-2 ¼). 

Sophomore Kiersten Schmitt (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) finished ninth at 9.89 meters (32-5 ½). Schram was 10th at 9.58 meters (31-5 ¼).

In the pole vault, sophomore Abigail Cumings (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) cleared 2.90 meters (9-6 ¼) for eighth place.

In the shot put, senior Greta Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) took eighth with a throw of 11.79 meters (38-8 ¼).

In the hammer throw, junior Sophia Raymond (Woodstock, Illinois / Woodstock) placed ninth with a toss of 39.28 meters (128-10).

Hope is scheduled to compete next at the MIAA Outdoor Combined Events Championships on Tuesday-Wednesday, April 22-23, at Calvin University.
