Track and Field's Catherine Leahy Wins 400 Meters at GVSU Early Meet

Hope College runner Catherine Leahy clocked a winning 400-meter time of 57.66 seconds on Friday at Grand Valley State University.

The junior from Elk Rapids, Michigan (Elk Rapids HS) topped a field of 19 runners during Day 1 of the two-day, non-scoring GVSU Early Meet on Friday.

Two of Leahy's teammates joined Leahy in the Top 10: senior Jasmine Zimmerman (Byron Center, Michigan / Home School) in eighth at 1:02.52 and freshman Clare Sherman (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) in ninth with a PR 1:02.87.

Hope recorded 19 more Top 10 performances during the 10-team event that concluded on Saturday.

In the shot put, senior Greta Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) finished runner-up in a field of 18 on Friday with a toss of 12.42 meters (40 feet, 9 inches) that ranks 34th in NCAA Division III this outdoor season.

Junior Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) placed fourth at 12.27 meters (40-3 ¼), ranking 44th in the nation. Roelofs was ninth at 10.76 meters (34-3 ¾).

In the open javelin, junior Karly Roelofs (Kingsley, Michigan / Kingsley Area took second in a field of six on Saturday by posting a season-best heave of 30.08 meters (98-8).

In the 200 meters, junior Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) clocked a third-place time of 24.51 seconds in a field of 34 on Friday.

Schermerhorn's run is the fourth-fastest in Division III this season.

Leahy finished sixth at 25.36 seconds. Freshman Sofia Fisher (Lombard, Illinois / Montini Catholic) took 10th with a PR 25.76.

In the 100 meters, Schermerhorn tied for third on Friday at a hand-clocked time of 12.5 seconds. Fisher was seventh at 12.7.

In the triple jump, sophomore Kiersten Schmitt (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) placed third out of six entrantson Friday with a leap of 10.5 meters (32-11 ¾). Junior Meredith Kramer (Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) took fourth with a PR 9.82 meters (32-2 ¾). Senior Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) was fifth at 9.70 meters (31-10).

In the 800 meters, sophomore Amanda Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) finished sixth in a field of 30 on Friday with a time of 2:20.82. Freshman Noel Vanderbilt (Saugatuck, Michigan / Home School) was 10th with a PR 2:26.95.

In the open discus, Bice placed eighth in a field of 18 on Saturday by posting a season-best toss of 3.6.35 meters (119-3). Robrahn was ninth at 34.40 meters (112-10).

In the 100 hurdles, freshman Lydia Rowe (Livonia, Michigan / Adlai E. Stevenson) clocked an eighth-place run of 20.61 seconds on Friday.

In the hammer throw, junior Sophia Raymond (Woodstock, Illinois / Woodstock) posted a season-best, ninth-place throw of 39.78 meters (130-6) on Friday.

In the 5,000 meters, freshman Tessa Rindfliesch (Zeeland, Michigan / West Ottawa) took 10th in a field of 27 at 19:10.36 on Friday.

Hope's next meet is Saturday, April 12, at Wheaton College (Illinois).
