Women's Soccer's First-Half Surge Downs Wartburg

Hope scores three times before halftime for the second consecutive game

The Hope College women's soccer team struck quickly and often again, setting the stage for an impressive start to the 2025 season.

The Flying Dutch scored three first-half goals for the second consecutive game Saturday, earning a 3-0 victory against Wartburg College (Iowa) before a Van Andel Soccer Stadium crowd of 431.

Three different goal scorers propelled Hope to a 2-0 start: junior forward Halle Barnard (Rockford, Michigan/Rockford HS), sophomore defender Adelyn Raad (Jenison, Michigan/Hudsonville HS) and senior forward Claudia Folkert (Ada, Michigan/Forest Hills Central HS).

The victory marked the first time since 2017 that the Flying Dutch scored at least three times in both games to open a season.

It was also the first time since 2001 that Hope began a season with back-to-back shutouts.

A dominant possession game limited scoring opportunities for Wartburg (0-2). The Flying Dutch outshot the Knights 28-4 and allowed only two shots on goal.

Hope controlled the ball on Wartburg's half of the field 75 percent of the game, including 42 percent near the goal.

Barnard started Hope's second straight three-goal first half in the 19th minute, scoring her first goal of the season from 12 yards out, just outside the right corner of the goal area, off a well-placed cross from junior forward Heidi Berkey (Grand Haven, Michigan/Grand Haven HS).

It was Barnard's first goal of the season and Berkey's first assist.

In the 31st minute, Raad buried her first collegiate goal from 30 yards out with a long strike just outside the penalty area.

Folkert capped the surge in the 40th minute, netting her second goal of the season with a 12-yard shot from the left wing into the upper-right corner of the goal.

Hope plays next at noon Central on Friday, Sept. 15, at Carleton College (Minn.).
