Women's Soccer Rolls Past Wheaton in Chicago

The Hope College women's soccer team heads into a weekend showdown on a roll.

The Flying Dutch erupted for three goals for the third time this season and defeated Wheaton College (Illinois), 3-0, on Tuesday near Chicago.

Hope (4-2-1) also posted back-to-back victories for the second time this season. The Flying Dutch's next game is Saturday, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m. against sixth-ranked University of Chicago at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The game is part of the Hope Athletics Orange and Blue Weekend on campus. Purchase one ticket for $18 for admission to the football game, the men's soccer home game on Friday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m., and the women's soccer home game. Single-game tickets are also on sale.

Senior Olivia Dieppa, junior Halle Barnard and sophomore Heidi Berkey all scored.

Dieppa (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) headed her third goal of the season during the 15th minute, launching the corner kick from sophomore Adelyn Raad (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) into the top left corner of the goal.

Dieppa matched last season's career-high of three goals. It was Raad's second assist this season.

Hope maintained a one-goal lead until midway through the second half when the Flying Dutch struck twice in less than seven minutes.

Barnard (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) netted her second goal of the season in the 62nd minute, firing a shot into the low left corner from about 13 yards out after fending off a challenge for the ball at her feet on the upper right side of the penalty box.

Berkey (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) blistered home her first goal of the season from about the same spot as Barnard.

Senior Lauren Ellinger (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) set up Berkey with a shot drop pass after blocking out a Wheaton defender trying to swipe possession. It was Ellinger's first career assist.

Hope doubled up Wheaton on shots, 14-7. The loss dropped Wheaton to 3-3-1 on the season.

Defensively, goalkeepers Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) and Maggi McHugh (Boyne City, Michigan / Boyne City) combined for the shutout. Feenstra made one save in 93 minutes of play. McHugh also stopped one shot.
