Women's Soccer Earns Draw vs. Sixth-Ranked University of Chicago

The Flying Dutch cap the first Orange and Blue Weekend with a near-upset

The Hope College women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with sixth-ranked University of Chicago on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium during Orange and Blue Weekend.

Seniors Ainsley Harris (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) and Lina Rea (Macomb, Michigan / Utica) scored for the Flying Dutch.

Hope is now 4-2-2 after denying unbeaten Chicago its sixth victory of the season.

The Maroons, who had yielded only one goal all season, rallied for the tie by scoring tying goals twice.

The Flying Dutch struck first in the sixth minute. Senior Grace Fowler turned a Chicago clearing attempt near midfield into a breakaway for Harris, who rifled a shot into the low left corner of the net 5 minutes, 47 seconds into the match. It was the second goal of the season for Harris.

Chicago (5-0-1) pulled even when Ella Cho scored her first goal 5:56 into the second half.

Hope quickly answered, taking a 2-0 lead 5 ½ minutes later when a Fowler looping feed found a streaking Rea just outside of the penalty area. Rea then placed a left-footed shot from 18 yards out inside the left post for her third goal of the season.

The Flying Dutch came within 5:17 of recording an upset, but Mary Stuart Kerrigan headed home a rebound inside the right post.

Chicago outshot Hope by a 21-5 margin. Junior goalkeeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) made a season-high 10 saves for the Flying Dutch.

Hope is now unbeaten against Chicago in their past four meetings, with two ties and two wins. The all-time series is tied 6-6-3.

The Flying Dutch's next match is Saturday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. at Ohio Wesleyan University.
