Women's Soccer Triumphs in the Non-Conference Finale at Ohio Wesleyan

The Hope College women's soccer team applied relentless pressure at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, breaking through with the goals needed for a 2-1 victory.

The Flying Dutch improved to 5-2-2 and extended their unbeaten streak to four matches, with three wins and one tie against a nationally ranked opponent. The victory was Hope's fourth in the past five meetings.

With non-conference play concluded, the Orange and Blue now kicks off MIAA play Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 4 p.m. against the University of Olivet at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Tickets are on on sale through the Hope College Ticket Office online or between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. by phone at (616) 395-7890 or in person at 100 East 8th St.

Seniors Lauren Ellinger (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) and Lina Rea (Macomb, Michigan / Utica) scored for Hope, which earned a 20-6 edge in shots.

Ellinger's first goal of the season proved to be the difference.

After Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper Natalie Ryan punched away a shot by Rea, junior Halle Barnard (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) pounced on the rebound from 12 yards out at the top of the penalty area and sent it back on frame. Ellinger deflected Barnard's blast into the net to extend Hope's lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute.

The Flying Dutch grabbed an early lead in the eighth minute.

After a corner kick from sophomore Adelyn Raad (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) cleared to the far side of the goal area, junior Jenna Schreiber (Jenison, Michigan / Unity Christian) quickly crossed it back to the left post and onto the foot of Rea.

Rea set a career high for goals, surpassing her previous mark of three from last season.

Ohio Wesleyan (3-4-4) pulled within a goal in the 84th minute when Jazlyn Brooker scored. The Battling Bishops did not record another shot on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) made one save for Hope.
