The 13th-ranked Hope College volleyball team proved strong and mighty at the net from the start Tuesday in The Rivalry.
Led by middle hitters
Kamryn Burbridge and
Olivia Wyma, the Flying Dutch powered their way to a three-set victory over Calvin University, winning the MIAA opener 25-14, 25-18, 26-24 in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 1,721.
The Orange and Blue served up their eighth consecutive victory of the season and against the Knights, dating back to 2022.
Hope (12-4 overall, 1-0 MIAA) also extended its season winning streak to eight matches.
Head coach
Becky Schmidt said her team's quick work at the net set the tone.
"We started off blocking really strong — lining up, good timing," Schmidt said. "The timing, especially against Aerin Baker, is a little harder because she jumps so high that we have to wait a little longer. We're not going to get up there at the same level; we've got to wait for her to get up and hit it. Usually, we figure out a little more as the set goes on. We were able to do that from the first set today, which was great."
Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) totaled a match-high 11 kills at a .529 clip. The 6-foot-1 junior also recorded three block assists.
Wyma (Hartland, Wisconsin / Arrowhead) delivered 10 kills at a .429 clip. The 6-4 sophomore also contributed two solo blocks and four block assists.
Setter
Lauren Lee, named the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III National Player of the Week earlier in the day, contributed 33 assists and three block assists.
Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) helped Hope outhit Calvin, .226 to .096.
]The Flying Dutch also received six kills apiece from senior right-side hitter
Ella Contant (Elmhurst, Illinois / York Community) and freshman outside hitter
Kiera Morrison (Bartlett, Illinois / Wheaton Academy), and five from senior outside hitter
Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township).
Junior defensive specialist
Kathryn Oates (Liberty Township, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian) led Hope's defensive effort on the floor with 17 digs.
The victory snapped a seven-match winning streak for Calvin (12-3, 0-1 MIAA).
Hope's next match is Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at Saint Mary's College (12-3, 0-1 MIAA).
