Men's Soccer Edged by Ohio Northern

Freshman Luke Laird scored his first collegiate goal for the Hope College men's soccer team during a 2-1 loss to Ohio Northern University on Friday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Laird (Holland, Mich. / West Ottawa) headed in a free kick from senior Matthew Davidson (Grand Ledge, Mich. / Grand Ledge) in the 34th minute that evened the score at 1-1.

Hope, which slipped to 1-3, threatened to take the lead several times, including in the 50th minute when a shot from freshman Jack Lowman (Novi, Mich. / Northville) headed toward inside the right post was blocked by an ONU defender after a corner kick.

Ohio Northern keeper Carson Zurmehly made four of his seven games after halftime.

The teams remained deadlocked until the 80th minute.

After a clearing attempt left the Flying Dutchmen goal explosed, ONU's Sterling Segal launched the ball from just inside the midfield line that Colin Gottron headed into an open shot despte being contested by Hope defenders.

Oho Northern improved to 3-0 on the season.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Monday, Sept. 8, at 5 p.m. at Franklin College (Ind.).
