Men's Basketball Falls to Calvin in The Rivalry's 217th Showdown

Hope is now in a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA

For the first time this competitive MIAA season, the Hope College men's basketball team did not make the plays it needed down the stretch.

The Flying Dutchmen fell to Calvin University, 80-65, in front of a Saturday night crowd of 3,235 at DeVos Fieldhouse and dropped into a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA standings. It was the largest crowd this season in NCAA Division III men's basketball.

Hope (10-7) is tied with No. 15-ranked Calvin and the University of Olivet at 5-1 in league play. Fourth-place Trine University is one game back at 4-2.

The Flying Dutchmen wrap up the first half of MIAA play on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. against fifth-place Albion College at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Head coach Greg Mitchell credited the Knights during the 217th game in the rivalry. Hope still leads the all-time series, 111-106.

"I think their length got us," Mitchell said. "I loved the first half after the initial start. Our response was fantastic. We got a lot of good play out of a lot of different guys. At the start of the second half, they threw some more punches. I thought we were patient, not quick. I thought we were too slow offensively and lost our offensive rhythm. That was the difference. We've got to play sharper, and we will."

Calvin (13-4 overall) outscored the Flying Dutchmen 46-29 in the second half, completing a rally from a 12-point deficit late in the first half.

The Knights shot 54.5% from the field after halftime (18 of 33) while holding Hope to 23.3% (7 of 33).

Center Jalen Overway, a two-time All-American who missed last season because of injury, recorded game highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds. Fifteen of his points came in the second half.
Overway led five Calvin starters in double figures.

Hope, which had a five-game winning streak snapped, received a team-high 16 points from senior guard Marcus Wourman (Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing). Freshman guard Brendan Cargill (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) added 13, and senior guard Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) had 11.

Freshman center Sean Wesolek (Bay City, Michigan / John Glenn) contributed a career-high eight points.

The Flying Dutchmen will conclude the regular season at Calvin on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m.
