Women’s Soccer Strikes Late, Wins Thriller at Adrian

Rowan Klein and Jessica Reyes showed them how Oakland Christian Lancers rise to the occasion on the soccer field.

The now-Hope College teammates paired up for the go-ahead goal in a 2-1 victory at Adrian College on Saturday night that kept the Flying Dutch unbeaten in MIAA play. Hope improved to 8-3-1 overall and 4-0 against MIAA opponents.

The score was tied at 1-1 in the 84th minute when Reyes and Klein went to work.

Reyes (Rochester Hills, Michigan) stole a goal kick at midfield and charged ahead. Just inside the 25-yard marker at Docking Stadium, the midfielder fed a streaking Klein (Clarkston, Michigan) at the penalty area. Klein, a forward, quickly booted to the left of charging Adrian keeper Riley Miller. The ball rolled into the goal inside the left post.

It was Klein's second goal of the season and the second in three games.

The assist was a team-leading fourth for Reyes.

The score had been deadlocked since the 62nd minute when Delaney Batur scored her first goal of the season.

Hope grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half. Senior Audra Usiak (Dimondale, Michigan / Lansing Christian) buried her first goal of the season under the crossbar from about 20 yards out following a pass from junior Stella DeSmit (Byron Center, Michigan / Unity Christian) with a header.

The Flying Dutch outshot Adrian (3-8-2, 0-4-0 MIAA) by a 19-7 margin. Senior keeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) made two saves.
