The Hope College men's basketball team nearly completed a comeback for the ages.
Rallying from a 17-point deficit in the final four minutes of regulation, the Flying Dutchmen forced overtime at Trine University before falling, 84-75, on Wednesday.
Hope (14-8, 9-2 MIAA) slipped into a second-place tie in the MIAA standings with Trine, one game behind The University of Olivet, which beat Calvin, 78-76, at home on Wednesday. The Flying Dutchmen host Olivet on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse for Senior Day, while Trine plays at Calvin.
Trine (18-5, 9-2) outscored Hope 17-8 in the five-minute overtime, making all eight free throws and all three 3-point attempts.
The Flying Dutchmen trailed 64-47 when senior forward Parker Hovey (Shelby, Michigan/Hart) started the comeback with a fast-break layup with 4:04 remaining.
Six points from Hovey and five from sophomore forward Charles Howell (Cadillac, Michigan/Cadillac) fueled a run that pulled Hope within two points at 66-64 with 13 seconds left in regulation on a layup by freshman Brendan Cargill (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Forest Hills Central).
After a Hope foul, Trine's Jayden Bradshaw split a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining. The Flying Dutchmen pushed the ball up the court, where Cargill buried a game-tying 3-pointer with three seconds left to force overtime.
Hope shot 33.3% from the field and 19.4% from 3-point range.
Hovey led the Flying Dutchmen with 16 points and nine rebounds, along with seven turnovers. Cargill added 14 points.
Howell and senior guard Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) scored nine points apiece.
Bradshaw paced Trine with 21 points, including five in overtime.
