No. 14 Men's Hockey Takes Two More from Aquinas

Freshman center Logan Nickolaus helped the 14th-ranked Hope College men's hockey team sweep a two-game series from Aquinas College over the weekend with a pair of two-goal performances.

The Flying Dutchmen won 7-2 on Friday at home at Griff's IceHouse West, then completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory on Saturday at Southside Ice Arena in Byron Center.


Hope, now on a five-game winning streak, improved to 21-6 overall. The Flying Dutchmen took all four games this season from Aquinas after winning a season-opening series, 8-1 and 5-0.


On Friday, Hope answered an Aquinas goal 25 seconds into the second period by scoring three times, including twice on the power play. Sophomore center Ryan Jaros (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central / Battle Creek Kernels USPHL Premier) netted the go-ahead goal at the 5:40 mark, followed by a power-play tally from freshman center Connor Dvorak (Freeland, Michigan / Freeland / Wausau Cyclones NA3HL) 11 minutes later.


Nickolaus (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center / Wisconsin Windigo NAHL) scored twice during a four-goal third period.


Goalie Sebastian Wigfield (Blue Hill, Maine / Saint Ignatius College Prep / Battle Creek Kernels USPHL Premier) made 17 saves for the Flying Dutchmen.


On Saturday, Nickolaus broke a 1-1 tie with a power-play goal with 2:23 remaining in the first period. He scored again 5:41 into the second period, the first of two Hope power-play goals in the frame.


Wigfield finished with 26 saves.


Hope has four games remaining in the regular season. The Flying Dutchmen play their final two GL6 games next against No. 15 Purdue Northwest on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. Central in Hammond, Indiana, and Friday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Griff's IceHouse West.
