Orion Yant Powers MIAA Co-Leading Men's Basketball Past Kalamazoo

Oh, Ryan — what another clutch performance for the Hope College men's basketball team.

Sophomore Orion Yant led the MIAA co-leading Flying Dutchmen to a 75-62 victory against Kalamazoo College Wednesday at DeVos Fieldhouse, scoring 18 of his career-high 24 points after halftime.

The 6-foot-6 center set a career high in points for the second consecutive game after netting 17 on Saturday at Adrian College.

Yant (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) also grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots in 24 minutes, 40 seconds on the court.

"He was the man tonight. We needed it: every single point, every single rebound," head coach Greg Mitchell said. "He's fearless. He's tough. He's confident, and he's good. He's helping us big time."

The Yant-fueled Flying Dutchmen outscored Kalamazoo 28-17 over the final 13 minutes. Yant's emphatic dunk off a missed 3-pointer sparked the decisive rally.

The 1,750th victory in program history kept the Orange and Blue tied atop the MIAA standings with The University of Olivet. Hope (13-7, 8-1 MIAA) and the Comets lead third-place Albion College by one game.

The Flying Dutchmen also received 13 points from freshman guard Brendan Cargill (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) and 12 from freshman guard Avery Sanchez (Turlock, California / John H. Pitman).

Seniors Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) and Marcus Wourman (Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) each chipped in eight points. Wourman moved within 16 points of joining the Orange and Blue's exclusive 1,000-point club.

Hope shot 50.5% from the field while holding Kalamazoo (3-17, 0-9 MIAA) to 41.7%.

The Flying Dutchmen will take a three-game winning streak to Alma College on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m., the second game of a women's-men's doubleheader between the two schools.
