Men's Basketball Aces Road Test at Alma

The Hope College men's basketball team welcomed back All-MIAA forward Parker Hovey from injury and continued its winning ways.

The MIAA co-leading Flying Dutchmen rolled to an 80-48 victory at Alma College on Saturday, sparked by Hovey's return.

The junior forward from Shelby, Michigan (Hart) scored 12 of his 16 points during the first half, staking Hope to a 36-24 halftime lead after playing for the first time since Jan. 24. The Flying Dutchmen poured in 44 second-half points and cruised to their largest victory of the season.

Winners of four games in a row, Hope is now 14-7 overall and 9-1 in MIAA play with two weeks remaining in the regular season. The Flying Dutchmen are tied for first place with The University of Olivet, one game ahead of third-place Trine University.

Hope plays both Trine and Olivet next week, beginning with Trine on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m. on the road.

Hovey joined sophomore center Orion Yant (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) in double figures.

The 6-6 Yant shot 85.7% from the field (6-7) and finished with a game-high 17 points. Yant also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.

The Flying Dutchmen shot 53.2% from the field (33-52) and outscored the Scots in the paint by a 46-24 margin.

Senior guard Marcus Wourman (Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing)) and freshman guard Brendan Cargill (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) chipped in eight points apiece.

Wourman moved closer to reaching Hope's 1,000-point club, pulling within eight points.

The 48 points allowed marked the season's best defensive effort. The Flying Dutchmen held Alma (4-17, 2-8 MIAA) to 35.2% field-goal shooting.
