Women's Lacrosse Dominant Defense Delivers Big Win vs. Kenyon

The Hope College women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten on the season Wednesday after defeating Kenyon (Ohio) College 17-5 on a windy and snowy afternoon for the Flying Dutch's fourth consecutive victory.

A year ago, Hope lost to Kenyon on the road, 16-13. This time, though, the Flying Dutch clamped down on the Owls' attack, holding them scoreless for the game's first 28 minutes in jumping out to an 8-0 lead.

"We changed our defense yesterday to figure out how to stop them, and it was great, because we executed it well," head coach Keagan Pieri said.

Not only did Hope keep Kenyon off the scoreboard until late in the first half at Van Andel Soccer Stadium, the Flying Dutch caused 16 of Kenyon's 26 turnovers for the contest and limited the Owls to just 13 shots.

Meanwhile, Hope had a balanced offensive attack that saw nine different players score at least one goal. Senior Stella Bottum (Alto, Michigan/Caledonia) and sophomore Elliana Hillard (DeWitt, Michigan/DeWitt) led the Flying Dutch offense with three goals apiece.

Sophomore Sarah Rott (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Catholic Central) added two goals and four assists for a six-point day, giving her 16 points in her last two games.

Senior Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Forest Hills Central) added to her all-time career leading goal total with two goals and two assists. Senior Sydney LaPrairie (Rochester, Michigan/Stoney Creek) and sophomore Ireland Brown (DeWitt, Michigan/DeWitt) also scored twice for the Flying Dutch.

"We put it together, every area that we needed to. It was precise, it was clean, it was efficient. We stayed loose, and we executed very well," Pieri said.

Hope outshot Kenyon 31-13 for the game and collected 25 ground balls to the Owls' 15. Kenyon fell to 1-4 on the season.

Defensively, Hillard and sophomore Jillian Paul (Rockford, Michigan/Rockford) each caused three turnovers for Hope, while Paul and senior Caroline Curnutt (Fishers, Indiana/Indianapolis Heritage Christian) each scooped up four ground balls.

Senior goalkeeper Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana/Westfield) made five saves for the Flying Dutch.

Hope returns to action Saturday, March 14, at noon against John Carroll (Ohio) University at home.
