Men's Lacrosse Delivers in Overtime, Beats Elmhurst for 6-0 Start

Hope tops the CCIW Preseason Favorite

Nifty defensive work from long-stick midfielder Tyler Berens put the ball in motion for the unbeaten Hope College men's lacrosse team Saturday.

Berens (West Olive, Michigan/West Ottawa) forced a quick turnover just past midfield during the final minute at Elmhurst College, setting up a rush for Flying Dutchmen senior midfielder Jack McNamara.

McNamara (Ada, Michigan/Forest Hills Central) raced 25 yards up the middle of the field before feeding junior attacker Gibson Heethuis in front of the Elmhurst net.

Heethuis (Hudsonville, Michigan/Hudsonville) snapped a 10-yard shot under the crossbar for a walk-off goal with 52 seconds remaining, securing a 12-11 overtime victory against the preseason favorite in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

The Flying Dutchmen improved to 6-0, their best start since the Orange and Blue won their first seven games in 2021. Hope next plays Tuesday, March 17, at 4 p.m. against Edgewood College at Van Andel Stadium.

Heethuis, the team's leading point scorer, finished with a team-high five points on two goals and three assists.

Freshman midfielder Jack Vasquez (Lake Orion, Michigan/Lake Orion) delivered a season-best and team-high three goals.

Sophomore attacker/midfielder Preston Hoexum (Ada, Michigan/Forest Hills Northern) chipped in two goals and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Ben Torrence (Portage, Michigan/Portage Central) also scored twice.

The Flying Dutchmen used a five-goal second period to grab a 7-3 lead late in the first half.

Elmhurst (5-2) answered after halftime with a five-goal period of its own, evening the score at 9-9 heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams briefly held leads before Elmhurst's Landon Davis tied the game at 11-11 with 1:35 remaining in regulation.

In overtime, Hope withstood turnovers on its first two possessions thanks to the last of five saves from sophomore goalkeeper Ridge Boehmer (Brighton, Michigan/Brighton) and two Berens-forced turnovers before the game-winning goal.
