Hope College sprinter Sara Schermerhorn sprinted into two event national finals on Friday at the opening day of the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama.

The senior from Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City West) qualified for the 400-meter final for the third time in her careerafter posting a time of 54.88 seconds during the preliminary round. Schermerhorn recorded the third-fastest qualifying time overall.

In the 200 meters, Schermerhorn also secured a spot in the 200-meter dash final for the first time, running 24.23 seconds to fifth overall among the eight qualifiers advancing to the championship race.

Schermerhorn will compete again on Saturday, March 14, at 4:25 p.m. Central in the 400 meters and 5:15 p.m. Central in the 200 meters.

Head coach Jordan Bartolazzi said Schermerhorn's performances positioned her well heading into the final day of competition.

"Sara ran two great prelims and set herself up nicely for tomorrow's final," Bartolazzi said. "This is her first 200 final ever, and another example of how much she's grown as an athlete. She'll be ready to roll tomorrow."

Schermerhorn finished seventh in the nation in 400 as a junior and a sophomore, earning All-America First Team Accolades.

In the 200, Schermerhorn has earned All-American Second Team honors twice, placing ninth last season and 11th in 2024.
