Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Mackenzie McMahon

Julia Brown Hits 200-Goal Mark During 20-11 Victory vs. DePauw

The senior attacker is the first in program history to accomplish the feat

The rainy afternoon had already tilted the Hope College women's lacrosse team's way, but the third quarter delivered a moment the Flying Dutch will remember.

Attacker Julia Brown slipped into space, gathered the pass from Sarah Rott, and fired a shot past the Tigers goalkeepe: clean, confident, and unmistakable.

When the ball hit the net, it wasn't just the senior's second goal of the day. It was career goal No. 200, making her the first in program history to reach the milestone.

The Flying Dutch went on to beat DePauw University, 20-11, behind nine different goal scorers at Van Andel Soccer Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win moved Hope to 3-0 on the season.

Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) finished the game with four goals two assists, giving her 202 goals and 66 assists in 57 career games.

Earlier in the week, Brown passed former teammate Elena Salazar '24 as the Flying Dutch's all-time leading goal scorer.

Hope dictated the pace from the opening whistle against DePauw, playing with a calm, confident control that never wavered.  The Flying Dutch stacked five goals in every quarter, establishing a rhythm that DePauw couldn't disrupt.

Sophomore Sarah Rott (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central HS) set the tone early, scoring three times in the opening frame and steering the offense with poise.

When DePauw pulled even at 11–11 with 4:32 remaining in the third quarter, instead of letting the moment shift the tone, Hope used it as a spark and strung together nine unanswered goals.

"I think we were grinding all four quarters, making sure that we were not giving little easy chances to them," said head coach Keagan Pieri. "Starting to win the draw control more consistently just allowed us to go on offense more."

Rott delivered a masterful performance with 10 points on four goals and six assists, finishing just one point shy of the Van Andel Soccer Stadium single-game record of 11, set by Maddie Ferguson against Siena Heights on April 16, 2013.

Sophomore Ireland Brown (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) rounded out Hope's multi-goal scorers with a hat trick.

Sophomore Elliana Hillard (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt), sophomore Annie Kipling (Spring Lake, Michigan / Spring Lake), sophomore Megan Bushart (Caledonia, Michigan / Caledonia), senior Caleigh Randall (Lansing, Michigan / DeWitt), and senior Sydney Laprairie (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek) each added a goal.

Senior goalkeeper Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana / Westfield) anchored the defense with 10 saves on 31 shots.

Hope returns to the turf on Wednesday, March 11, at 5 p.m. to host Kenyon College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
