Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Albion, Claims Share of MIAA Lead

It took the Hope College women's lacrosse team more than six minutes to score the opening goal in Wednesday afternoon's game against Albion College.

Once senior attacker Julia Brown took a feed from sophomore attacker Sarah Rott and buried a shot behind Britons' goalkeeper Nicole Miller, the floodgates opened.

The Flying Dutch scored nine goals over the next seven minutes and never looked back in defeating Albion, 19-4, at Van Andel Stadium to move into a first-place tie with Adrian College and Calvin College atop the MIAA standings.

"We knew their keeper was good. We scouted her well," head coach Keagan Pieri said. "We just had to get past her … being a brick wall in the first six minutes."

Hope improved to 4-1 in the MIAA and 10-2 overall, marking the sixth time since 2019 that the Flying Dutch have won at least 10 games in a season. The only time Hope did not reach double digits in wins was in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, when the Flying Dutch played only four games.

Six different players scored during the first-quarter uprising, with Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Forest Hills Central), sophomore midfielder Ireland Brown (DeWitt, Michigan/DeWitt) and senior midfielder Stella Bottum (Alto, Michigan/Caledonia) each scoring twice. Rott assisted on four of the goals.

Hope kept it rolling in the middle two quarters, extending its lead to 18-0 late in the third before Albion got on the scoreboard. The big lead allowed Pieri to substitute freely.

"It was a great team win. It was pretty cool to make sure everybody was in the game and being part of it. We love to be a team that is going to be able to use all their players. We take a lot of pride in that," she said.

Julia Brown led Hope with four goals and three assists for a seven-point evening. Ireland Brown and freshman Lucy Harrell (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) added three goals apiece, while Rott (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Catholic Central) had two goals and six assists for an eight-point performance.

Bottum and sophomore midfielder Annie Kipling (Spring Lake, Michigan/Spring Lake) each scored twice for the Flying Dutch.

Hope dominated every major team statistical category, outshooting Albion 35-17 and winning 17 draw controls to seven for the Britons. The Flying Dutch committed just nine turnovers compared to 19 for the Britons and collected 17 ground balls to Albion's nine.

Defeating Albion for the fifth consecutive tie, Hope evened the all-time series at 8-8.

Hope travels to Angola, Indiana, on Saturday, April 18 for an 11 a.m.  MIAA contest at Trine University.
