Men's Lacrosse Starts Strong, Tops Trine for 12th Win in a Row

An early barrage sparked the unbeaten Hope College men's lacrosse team to a rewarding 10-7 victory at Trine University on Wednesday.

The Flying Dutchmen never trailed after scoring eight times during the first half and defeated the Thunder, who knocked them off in last season's MIAA Tournament semifinals.

Hope continued the best start to a season in program history, improving to 12-0 overall and 2-0 in MIAA play. The 12-game winning streak is the second-longest all-time for the Flying Dutchmen.

Attacker Preston Hoexum of Ada, Mich. (Forest Hills Northern) scored two of his game-high four goals during the first quarter and assisted on the other when Hope grabbed a 3-1 lead.

Hoexum drew an assist on a goal from freshman midfielder Jackson Arnold of Ada, Mich. (Forest Hills Eastern) that snapped a 1-1 tie at the 5-minute, 47-second mark of the quarter on a Mitchell Voglewede man-up goal.

Seventy-one seconds later, Hoexum struck for his second unassisted goal of the quarter. Trine (11-3, 1-2 MIAA) did not get back within two goals until the 4:50 mark of the fourth quarter. The Flying Dutchmen extended their lead to 8-3 by halftime.

Sophomore attacker Jack Zuiderveen of Hudsonville, Mich. (Hudsonville), chipped in two goals.

Defensively, junior goalie Jack Balmforth of Livonia, Mich. (Detroit Catholic Central, made seven saves for Hope. Sophomore long-stick midfielder Tyler Berens of West Olive, Mich. (West Ottawa) caused a team-best four turnovers.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at Alma College.
