Kairo Barifagok Makes History as Men's Track and Field's First 400-Meter Hurdles All-American

Hope College hurdler Kairo Barifagok captured an All-American, fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles during the final day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The sophomore from Las Vegas, Nevada (Cristo Rey Saint Viator HS) clocked a time of 52.10 seconds in the championship final, locking down a spot on the podium.

Barifagok earned First Team All-America honors, marking a historic milestone as the first men's student-athlete in Hope College history to earn All-American honors in the event. He advanced to Saturday's final after posting the fastest time in his preliminary heat on Thursday at 52.07 seconds.

Head coach Jordan Bartolazzi praised Barifagok's resilience during the final weeks of the season, leading up to the national meet.

"Kairo proved in the last three weeks that he's capable of running at the highest levels of Division III," Bartolazzi said. "After a disappointing conference meet, he fundamentally changed his approach to the race and showed remarkable ability to adapt on the fly."

The performance puts a cap on a historic outdoor season for Barifagok, who just weeks earlier shattered Hope's 15-year-old program record in the 400-meter hurdles by running a blistering 51.52 seconds at the Augustana Last Chance Meet.

Bartolazzi noted that the milestone performances were a direct result of the sophomore's work ethic and mindset.

"His fourth-place national finish today is a testament to his commitment to being the best version of himself," Bartolazzi said. "Kairo loves the sport, and I cannot wait to see how he continues to grow personally and athletically."
