Unbeaten Men’s Soccer Posts Fourth Shutout, Beats Illinois College

The Hope College men's soccer team kicked off Orange and Blue Weekend on campus with another strong and true performance.

The Flying Dutch improved to 4-0 on the season on Friday, topping Illinois College, 3-0, at Van Andel Soccer Stadium by using a familiar script. Hope utilized multiple goal scorers and a stingy defense over 90 minutes to post the Orange and Blue's fourth shutout of the season.

Head coach David Blahnik said his team showed a lot of grit against a challenging opponent.

"Illinois College was a very good team and made things very difficult for us throughout the game," Blahnik said. "At times, we struggled finding and maintaining a rhythm in the game, but we showed great resolve in finding a way to win. I'm proud of our team's ability to maintain discipline in a back-and-forth match. Our depth continues to step up and find goals for us."

Senior Evan Morrison (Canton, Michigan / Canton) opened the scoring in the sixth minute, blasting an errant Illinois College clearing attempt from a few steps inside the top of the penalty area. It was Morrison's second goal of the season.

The Orange and Blue maintained a one-goal lead despite Illinois College's attack until the 62nd minute.

Freshman Eli Jarrell (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) doubled the lead after firing across the goal area from eight yards out and burying the soccer ball inside the far right post. Senior Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) set up Jarrell's second goal of the season with a short pass just inside the back line.

The Flying Dutch added a third goal in the 87th minute. Senior Micah Wieland (Bristol, Indiana / Northridge) snapped a two-yard touch pass in the goal area from senior Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan). Jarrell also recorded an assist on the play with the initial shot on goal.

Hope finished with a 20-9 edge in shots. Senior goalkeeper Cooper Hutt (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) made three saves.

"Cooper played great tonight in goal," Blahnik said.

The Orange and Blue start a five-game road trip on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. at Ohio Northern University.
