Men’s Soccer Rallies for Hard-Fought Draw at Ohio Northern

The Hope College men's soccer team emerged from a challenging week — featuring three matches in five days — still unbeaten.

The Flying Dutch rallied to a 3-3 draw at Ohio Northern University, moving to 4-0-1 on the season.

Freshman Rayden Dominguez (Skokie, Illinois / Loyola Academy) delivered a clutch equalizer in the 83rd minute for the Orange and Blue.

"Our guys battled hard today and left everything they had on the field after a tough week playing three very good teams in five days," said head coach David Blahnik, whose team also this week beat both Illinois Tech and Illinois College, 3-0, at home on Tuesday and Friday, respectively.

"Ohio Northern is one of the best-coached teams in the country and is always an extremely tough match for us. We came here for the win and do not want to settle for ties, but I am extremely proud of the team for battling the way they did and fighting back from two deficits in the game," Blahnik said. "There are a lot of things we can take from this week for practice to get better on the soccer field, but our guys made it clear that they have the right work ethic and commitment to each other to compete and battle regardless of the situation."

Dominguez came through with his first collegiate goal by knocking in a header from junior Jackson Mindling (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) from 15 yards out. Ohio Northern (1-1-2) had held a 3-2 lead for 24 minutes.

It was the second time Hope overcame a one-goal deficit after not trailing in either of the first four games. Dominguez drew the assist on the tying goal from senior Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) in the 37th minute that made the score 2-2.

"We all have seen in practice what Rayden is capable of," Blahnik said. "In the few short weeks he has been with the team, we knew it was only a matter of time where he would make a big impact in a game, and today was that day. He had a phenomenal setup for Seth on our second goal and scored an absolute beauty late in the game to even it up."

Junior Ryker Corstange (Richland, Michigan / Gull Lake) staked the Flying Dutch to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. Senior Caden Chenlo (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) recorded the assist.

A few minutes later, Ohio Northern answered with two goals in less than two minutes. The Polar Bears finished with an 18-7 edge in shots.

Senior Cooper Hutt (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) made five saves.
