Women’s Soccer Rallies at Saint Mary’s for MIAA-Opening Victory

After the Saint Mary's College Belles rang quickly, the Hope College women's soccer team quieted the noise and went to work.

The Flying Dutch rallied for a 4-1 victory at Saint Mary's on Wednesday in the MIAA opener after giving up a goal in the first minute.

Hope answered triumphantly with three goals before halftime. Four different Flying Dutch scored in the game as the Orange and Blue raised their record to 5-3-1 overall (1-0 MIAA).

The Belles jumped ahead early. Lilly Larimer struck 40 seconds after the opening kickoff with her second goal of the season.

Senior Kayla Cannon (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) evened the score in the 20th minute, delivering her first goal of the season and the fourth in her career.

In the 38th minute, freshman Avery Plummer (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) produced the game-winner. It was Plummer's team-leading fifth of the season.

Hope kept the pressure on before doubling its lead in the 41st minute. Senior Halle Barnard (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) matched her career-best with her fourth goal of the season and the 11th of her career. Freshman Jessica Reyes (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Oakland Christian) drew the first of her two assists.

After halftime, Reyes set up junior Alexis Suptela (Palatine, Illinois / William Fremd) in the 47th minute for her third goal of the season — and the third goal of her Orange and Blue career. Reyer earned her first multi-assist game.

Senior keeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) did not need to make a save after the Belles scored. Junior Maggi McHugh (Boyne City, Michigan / Boyne City) collected two saves after subbing in for Feenstra in the 83rd minute.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3, at noon, against Alma College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. It is Senior Day and Poster Day.
