Men’s Soccer Reigns on a Rainy Night, Blanks Illinois Tech

There was no raining on the Hope College men's soccer team's goal parade.

The Flying Dutch scored twice during the first half and cruised to their third shutout of the season on a rain-soaked Tuesday night, a 3-0 victory against the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Unbeaten Hope improved to 3-0 overall. The Orange and Blue have outscored opponents by a 14-0 margin this season.

Midfielder Josh Weigel opened the scoring in the 13th minute. The senior netted his first goal of the season by tucking a pass from senior Evan Morrison (Canton, Michigan / Canton) inside the far right post on an angle from 10 yards out.

In the 35th minute, freshman Eli Jarrell pounced on a rebound in front of the net from a senior Seth Walters free kick from 16 yards out. It was Jarrell's first goal this season.

The Flying Dutch clinched the victory in the 77th minute. Senior midfielder Micah Wieland (Bristol, Indiana) took a well-placed header from 18 yards out, dribbled a couple of feet before launching an angled blast inside the far left post. It was Wieland's second goal this season.

Hope outshot Illinois Tech (2-2) by a 22-15 margin.

Goalkeeper Cooper Hutt made six saves for the Flying Dutch.

Hope's next home game is part of Orange and Blue Weekend campus this weekend. The Flying Dutch host Illinois College on Friday, Sept. 11, at 5 p.m.
