The Hope men's soccer team has announced four team awards for the 2013 season.
Senior midfielder Jason Muller of Petoskey (Petoskey HS), pictured top right, is the Flying Dutchmen's Offensive MVP, while junior back Logan Sikkenga of Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS), pictured, bottom right, is Hope's Defensive MVP.
Most Inspirational honors went to seniors Grant Neil of Holland (West Ottawa HS) and Matthew VanZytveld of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS).
Sophomore midfielder Toby Blom of Holland (Holland Christian HS) was named the team's Most Improved Player.
Coach Steven Smith's Flying Dutchmen finished 23rd in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire NCAA Division III poll announced this week.
Hope also made honorable mention in the final d3soccer.com poll. The Flying Dutchmen placed 30th in the d3soccer.com rankings with 30 points.
Hope posted a 17-5-2 overall record during the 2013 season, matching the school record for wins in a single season.
The Flying Dutchmen reached the second round of the Division III Tournament. It was their 11th NCAA Tournament appearance under Smith.
Hope also won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament during the 2013 season after finishing second during the regular season.
Muller led Hope with 16 goals and 36 points in 24 games. He also topped the Flying Dutchmen with 44 shots on goal.
Sikkenga provided a two-way threat. His career-high six goals for the season all came in league play. He helped the Flying Dutchmen allow only one goal per game this season.
