Look back at Flying Dutch's 2012 volleyball season

A successful 2012 volleyball season for Hope College came with 29 wins the recognition of three Flying Dutch players by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Sophomore outside hitter Jenna Grasmeyer of Hudsonville (Unity Christian HS) was named a first-team All-American, while senior setter Greer Bratschie of Grand Rapids (East Grand Rapids HS) is a third-team All-America honoree. In addition, junior middle hitter Mari Schoolmaster of Portage (Portage Central HS) is an honorable mention All-America. All three players also were all first-team All-MIAA honorees.

This marked the first time in school history that two players have been named AVCA All-Americans in the same season. Three players were previously honored — Becky Schmidt (1998), Andrea Helminiak (2009) and Jacie Fiedler (2010).

As a team, Hope had the second-highest Team GPA in the MIAA at 3.671 and claimed the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Team GPA award.

Coach Becky Schmidt's Flying Dutch posted a 29-5 season record and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III regional tournament. Hope finished seventh in the final AVCA poll of the season.

The Flying Dutch were the Division III national leader in two statistical categories, according to the final 2012 season report of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Hope led the 420 Division III teams in assists per set (12.82) and kills per set (13.88). The Flying Dutch also ranked eighth in hitting percentage (.268) and 32nd in blocks per set (2.12).

Grasmeyer ranked fifth among of Division III players in kills per set (4.36) and eighth in points per set (5.01). Grasmeyer set a Hope single season mark for kills per set.

Bratschie ranked ninth in Division III for assists per set (10.74). Greer established the Hope career record for assists per set with an average of 10.49.
