The Hope men's cross country team qualified one runner for the NCAA Division III Championships and finished 12th in a 37-team regional field during the 2012 season.
Senior Blake Rottschafer of Spring Lake (Spring Lake HS) placed 194th in a field of 276 runners at nationals with an 8K time of 26 minutes, 21.5 seconds.
Rottschafer also led the Flying Dutchmen during the Great Lakes Regional. He posted a 15th-place, 8K time of 25:34 out of 256 runners. Other Hope runners to score were freshman Joseph Beemer of St. Joseph (St. Joseph HS) in 80th place (26:45), junior Sam Pederson of Mt. Prospect, Ill. (Prospect HS) in 85th (26.49), sophomore Zack Zandbergen of Grandville (Grandville HS) in 93rd (26.54), freshman Kyle Anderson of Shorewood, Minn. (Minnetonka HS) in 103rd (27:01), and junior Tom Smeltzer of Frankfort (Benzie Central HS) in 113th (27:33).
Rottschafer and Pederson each earned All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) First Team honors in 2012. They helped Hope placed second at the MIAA Championships.
