Last year's event at DeVos Fieldhouse saw St. Thomas (Minn.) University rally in the final for a five-set win against Calvin College. The match was played in front of 3,517 fans, the vast majority of them from Calvin. The previous attendance record for a national championship match was 3,423 in 1991, when Washington University-St. Louis defeated University of California-San Diego for the Division III title in St. Louis, Mo.

The Tommies, who won their last 35 matches in a row, became the first team from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to win the national championship in volleyball.

"To be down two sets, in that environment, and to be able to pull out the win speaks volumes about our girls and how much they wanted it," St. Thomas coach Thanh Pham said. "They're just fighters. They fought through it. I couldn't be more proud."

Jill Greenfield of St. Thomas was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Sara Atkinson of St. Thomas, Lizzie Camp of Calvin, Emily Crowe of Calvin, Abby Hogge of Christopher Newport (Va.), Megan Rietema of Calvin and Kaiti Wachter of St. Thomas joined Greenfield on the all-tournament team.

The tournament also included Clarkson (N.Y.), Elmhurst (Ill.) College, Salisbury (Md.) University, University of Massachusetts-Boston and University of Puget Sound (Wash.).
