Five Facts to Know About Hope Women's Swimming & Diving

 

Shelly Russell, Dawn Hoving and Chelsea Wiese are some of the notable names of the Hope women's swimming team and its growing tradition.

Here are five facts to know about the Flying Dutch.

Numbers of sisters who finished 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke at the 1994 NCAA Division III Championships.  Susan and Sara Looman, who are twins, topped the field. It was the first time in the history of the national meet that sisters, let alone twin sisters, finished one-two in an event.

Number of times a member of the Flying Dutch has been named the Most Valuable Swimmer in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). Shelly Russell did it three times (1987-89), as did Dawn Hoving Noorman (1992-94).

Number of NCAA Division III All-Americans in relay for the Flying Dutch. The elite group features national championships in the 200 medley relay of Susan Looman, Megan Hunter, Dawn Hoving and Sarah DeWitt (1994), and 400 medley relay of Susan Looman, Megan Hunter, Dawn Hoving and Sarah DeWitt (1994).

Number of NCAA Division III All-Americans in individual events for the Flying Dutch. The elite group features national champions Shelly Russell in the 200 freestyle (1988-1989), 500 freestyle (1987-89) and 1,650 freestyle (1987-88), Dawn Hoving in 100 butterfly (1993) and 200 butterfly (1992-93), Susan Looman in 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke (1994), and Betsy VandenBerg in the 200 breaststroke (2000-01).

Chelsea Wiese was presented the 2012 NCAA Elite 89 award for maintaining the highest cumulative grade point average among all of the competitors in the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships. The Elite 89 award is presented to the top scholar-athlete at each of the 89 NCAA championships held annually. An accounting major. Wiese maintained a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average. Co-captain of the team, Wiese was the 2012 MIAA champion in the 200 and 400 yard individual medley events and competed at nationals with teammates in four relay events.
