Five Facts To Know About Flying Dutchmen Track & Field

 

Rob Appell, John Kleinheksel and Kevin Cole are among the accomplished names in the rich tradition of Hope men's track & field.

Here are five facts to know about the Flying Dutchmen.

Rob Appell cleared seven feet to win the 1985 NCAA Division III national championship in the high jump. He received MIAA Most Valuable trackster award three times (1984-86), an accomplishment not repeated since.

Over eight seasons at the helm of the track and field program, coach Kevin Cole has coached 41 conference champions in men's track & field and nine NCAA All-American performances.

Hope has all NCAA All-America performances in nine different events over the years.

The Flying Dutchmen have been champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) 10 times, most recently in 2012.

The oldest mark still in the Hope men's track and field record book goes back 55 years to the 1958 season when John Kleinheksel cleared 23 feet, 6 1/2 inches.
