Lincoln Phillips Tops MIAA Decathlon Championships after Day 1

The Hope College men's track and field team opened Day 1 of competition at the MIAA Outdoor Championships – Combined Events, presented by Collegiate Credit Union, on Monday and recorded two of the top four decathlon point totals.

Freshman Lincoln Phillips (Dorr, Michigan / Hamilton and senior John Wenderski (Livonia, Michigan / University of Detroit Jesuit) sit in first and fourth place, respectively, heading into Day 2 on Tuesday, April 21, at home at Brewer Track. Competition for the final five events will begin at 11 a.m.


Phillips led the field of 14 after Day 1, compiling 3,301 points over five events. He recorded strong performances across the board, including a first-place finish in the 400 meters (52.40) that garnered 707 points.


He also earned 619 points by tying for the top high jump at 1.79 meters (5 feet, 10 ½ inches). He also posted top-three finishes in the long jump and high jump.


Phillips leads second-place Rhys Bedford of Calvin University by 81 points and third-place Zach Van Baren of Calvin by 85 points.


Wenderski, pictured below, sits fourth overall with 3,065 points, highlighted by a first-place finish in the shot put at 12.32 meters (40-5).


Freshman Josh Bruxvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) added a fifth-place standing with 2,902 points, while freshman Madden Valentine (Archbold, Ohio Archbold) is currently 10th with 2,783 points.
