The Hope College men's golf team is perched seventh at the first round of the 36-hole, two-day tournament Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Tournament on Friday.

The Flying Dutchmen shot a team score of 308. They trail leader Owens (Ohio) Community College by 10 strokes heading into Saturday's 8 a.m. final round. The tournament features 17 teams.

Junior Evan Telzerow of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Northern HS) topped Hope with a 2-over-par 74 that has him tied for sixth place.

Junior Ben Lewis of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) is 19th with a 76. The Flying Dutchmen also received a 78 from junor Collin Breit of Muskegon (Western Michigan Christian) and 80s from junior Ben Lanting of Littleton, Colo., and sophomore Paul Bardenhagen of Cedar (Leland HS).

Telzerow said he and his teammates are determined to shoot lower on Saturday.

"The conditions were hard to get used to. Greens were a little slow," Telzerow said. "We're all confident going into tomorrow. I think we still have a good chance to contend for first or second."

The other teams ahead of Hope are Bethel (Ind.) at 300, Kalamazoo at 302, Spring Arbor and Indiana Wesleyan at 304 and Trine (Ind.) at 305.
