Hope Men's Golf Ties For First At MIAA Jamboree, Keeps Overall Lead

Ben Lewis, Winton Munch and the Hope men's golf team maintained its lead in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings Saturday by tying for first place at league jamboree.

The Flying Dutchmen shot a team score of 300 at Pine River Country Club to match Calvin College's effort. Hope leads second-place Calvin by five strokes halfway through the jamboree schedule.

Lewis, a junior from Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS), and Munch, a freshman from Traverse City (Traverse City Central HS), both carded even-par 72s at Pine River. Lewis and Munch, at right, shared medalist honors with Calvin's Justin Krow.

Junior Evan Telzerow of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Northern HS) shot a 74 for coach Bob Ebels' Flying Dutchmen. Junior Ben Lanting of Littleton, Colo. (Front Range Christian HS) carded an 80, while junior Collin Breit of Muskegon (Western Michigan Christian HS) chipped in an 82.

"Pine River is known for a very firm golf course," Lewis said. "We just said at the beginning to keep the ball in front of you and just hit some greens. We were able to do that. They were pretty tricky conditions. It was windy and cold."

Hope tees off again on Monday when it travels to Kalamazoo Country Club for another MIAA Jamboree.
