Hope Softball Relishes Chance To Serve West Michigan Miracle League

The Hope softball team pitched in to help the West Michigan Miracle League celebrate its dedication and first Opening Saturday last weekend in Rockford.

The Flying Dutch sent 26 players and three coaches to assist at the West Michigan Miracle League, north of Grand Rapids. The facility provides opportunities to play baseball for children with physical and mental disabilities. Hope's softball team assisted players with hitting, running and fielding.

The day comprised of a ribbon cutting ceremony, a ceremonial first pitch, and then two one-inning games played among the four West Michigan Miracle League teams.

Hope senior Emma Page of Portage (Portage Central HS) was thrilled to serve.

"Volunteering at the Miracle League was such a great opportunity," Page said. "I loved helping my buddy, Alec, run around the bases, giving him ground balls before the game, and watching his face glow as we crossed home plate in our game. It was great to help kids get the chance to play a sport they love, which I normally take for granted."

Hope head coach Mary VandeHoef also took part along with assistants Krista Liverance and Jeanette Olinger.

"Serving at the West Michigan Miracle League was an unbelievable experience for our team," VandeHoef said "The smiles on the faces of the kids we worked with were priceless. It was fun to see the joy that was shared between the kids and our players who served as their buddies. It was wonderful to be a part of it, particularly with all the energy and excitement surrounding the Opening Day of the league.

"It was a day our team won't soon forget."

Opening Day was the start of the West Michigan Miracle League's four-week fall season.

The Hope women's basketball and baseball teams are volunteering this fall.
