Friday's win was the 300th win all-time at Hope for head coach Becky Schmidt over 11 seasons. She is 300-73 with the Flying Dutch and 333-106 total between Hope and Redlands (California).
"The first thing I want to do is credit Clarkson with a tremendous match," Schmidt said. "Defensively, they were very strong, Made our hitters have to think outside the box a little bit and move the ball around. They did a tremendous job digging, especially in sets two and three.
"I was pleased with the way my team continued to battle in some of those situations. When they pushed — they're certainly were some long rallies that we were exciting to watch and fun to play, but also a little nerveracking. But they found a way to continue to battle and found a way to make plays. I'm proud of them."
Outside hitter Jenna Grasmeyer of Jenison, Michigan (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), led the Flying Dutch with 10 kills. She is a three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association First Team All-American.
Hope featured a balanced attack against Clarkson (37-4).
Two Flying Dutch players recorded eight kills: seniors Anna Lynch of Lake Odessa, Michigan (Lakewood HS), and Amy VanderStoep of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS).
Sophomore Courtney Van Houzen of Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City West HS), chipped in seven kills and a match-high six block assists.
Hope finished plus-14 in digs. Junior Allie Mitchell of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern HS), collected 22 digs.
Junior setter and two-time AVCA Second Team All-American Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport, Michigan (Fruitport HS) collected 14 digs and 28 assists.
"I thought Allie had one of the best games of her season," Schmidt said. "She was all over the place back there. What was great too was that it just wasn't keeping balls alive, she was putting them to target. She made a life a lot better for Lauren. I was really pleased with the way she played today."
"(Courtney Van Houzen and I) talked before the match and said this was going to be an important match for her to establish herself and really force Clarkson to have to respect her and to draw their middle with her. When she got the ball she hammered it.
"Amy VanderStoep as well. When she got some opportunities, she put them away," Schmidt said. "Lauren did a great job moving the ball around and finding a way to isolate hitters. She's been able to do that all season long. We've been able to depend on that."
Hope is now 2-1 all-time in national quarterfinal matches. The Flying Dutch defeated Tufts (Massachusetts) 25-17, 25-23, 29-31, 25-18 in the 2009 quarterfinals.
Hope is 18-12 all-time in NCAA Tournament play.
