The Hope College men's track & field team looks to contend again with the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's elite during the 2014 season.
Coach Kevin Cole begins his ninth season with a men's roster of 53 athletes. There are 15 seniors, eight juniors, 17 sophomores and 13 freshmen.
Co-captains for this year's team are senior David Dolfin of Hingham, Wis. (Oostburg HS), senior Keenan Erickson of Farmington Hills (Farmington HS) and senior James Rogers of Saginaw (Valley Lutheran HS).
Hope continues its indoor season on Saturday, Feb. 15, when it competes at the Calvin College Invitational.
The Flying Dutchmen start their outdoor season on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15 when they travel to the Rhodes (Tenn.) Open.
Hope will host one outdoor event at the Gordon M. Brewer Track this spring. The Flying Dutchmen will square off against Calvin College in a "friendly" dual meet that does not count toward the MIAA standings.
The MIAA Field Day is Thursday and Friday, May 1-2, at Alma College.
The Flying Dutchmen placed second at the 2013 MIAA Field Day.
Hope returns the MIAA's top sprinter in sophomore Boone Marois of Traverse City (Traverse City Central HS). Marois, an All-MIAA performer, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes last season in 10.99 and 22.54 seconds, respectively.
Marois also anchored the MIAA champion 400 relay that included senior Steffon Mayhue of Holland (Holland HS) and sophomore Bryce Richards of Eaton Rapids (Eaton Rapids HS).
Hope returns six athletes who are three-time letterwinners — hurdler and jumper Dolfin, senior thrower Evan Finch of Ann Arbor (Pioneer HS), senior jumper Warren Hunt of Buckeye, Ariz. (Aqua Fria HS), Mayhue, senior distance runner Samuel Pederson of Mt. Prospect, Ill. (Prospect HS) and middle distance runner Rogers.
The Flying Dutchmen graduated among others Joel Rietsema, who became the sixth Hope male athlete to achieve All-America honors multiple times after an All-American, fourth-place effort in the 800 in 2013.
