Peyton Wells blasted a two-run homer for the Hope College softball team in a 9-0, six-inning mercy of Ripon (Wis.) on Friday that closed the Flying Dutch's spring break trip in Florida.
The Flying Dutch return home with a 5-4 record. Earlier in the day, Hope lost to Rowan (N.J.) 10-4.
Wells homered during a five-run, fifth inning that extended Hope's lead to 7-0. The junior first baseman from Rockford (Rockford HS) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Junior leftfielder Becca Phillips of Wayland (Wayland HS) added a two-run single in the fifth.
Winning pitcher Natalie Hiser of Westland (Livonia Churchill HS) fired a four-hit shutout. Hiser (4-1) struck out four and walked one.
Against Rowan, junior third baseman Kelsey Cooper of Romeo (Romeo HS) led Hope's offense with a RBI single and a sacrifice fly. Rowan never trailed after jumping to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first against losing pitcher Kate Laverty (1-3).
