Ben Lewis carded a 3-over-par 75 as the Hope College men's golf grabbed the early lead at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association NCAA Division III Tournament qualifier on Saturday.
Lewis posted the second-lowest round of the four-team tournament at Watermark Golf Course in Grand Rapids. The junior from Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) finished only behind Trine University's Connor Dwyer, who came in at even-par.
Hope shot a team score of 305 to grab an eight-shot lead over second-place Trine. Calvin College (315) is third, while Adrian College (319) is fourth.
The winner of the 54-hole tournament receives the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Hope hosts the final two 18-hole rounds next weekend at Wuskowhan Players Club.
Juniors Evan Telzerow of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Northern HS), pictured, and Ben Lanting of Littleton, Colo. (Front Range Christian HS) both carded 76s for the Flying Dutchmen to tie for third place in the individual standings.
Freshman Winton Munch of Traverse City (Central HS) added a 78 for Hope
Junior Collin Breit of Muskegon (Western Michigan Christian HS) had an 81 for the Flying Dutchmen.
