Box Score 1 Two scoreless innings from reliever Olivia Vacik of Bollingbrook, Ill. (Neuqua Valley HS) saved a 3-2 win for the Hope College softball team against visiting Alma College on Saturday and secured a split of their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader.
The Flying Dutch are now 13-10 overall and 7-1 in league play. They trail first-place Trine (Ind.) by one game heading into a doubleheader at Trine on Tuesday, April 15.
In the second game, senior catcher Emma Page of Portage (Portage Central HS) delivered a solo home run in the sixth inning to extend Hope's lead to 3-1. It was Page's second home run of the season.
Page added a RBI single in the top of the first to plate shortstop Jenna Maury of Lawton (Lawton HS) — two batters after Maury drove home centerfielder Autumn Anderson of Wayland (Wayland HS) with a single.
It was the second save of the season for Vacik, a junior from Bolingbrook, Ill. (Neuqua Valley HS).
Winning pitcher Kate Laverty of Eaton Rapids (Eaton Rapids HS) scattered seven hits and two earned runs over five innings. Laverty, a sophomore, struck out two and improved her record to 5-6.
Alma won the first game 13-4 in five innings.
Junior first baseman Peyton Wells of Rockford (Rockford HS), led Hope by going 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and three RBIs. The Scots recorded an eight-run third to seize an 11-0 lead.
