Peyton Wells
Peyton Wells homered and delivered six RBIs as the Hope College softball team swept Cornerstone University 7-5 and 9-3 on Monday.
The nonleague wins at Wolters Stadium improved the Flying Dutch to 17-14 overall.
In the first game, Wells slugged a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to put Hope ahead 2-1. The junior first baseman from Rockford (Rockford HS) then added a RBI double in the fifth inning and scored on a run-scoring single from catcher Adalee Robertson of Flushing (Flushing HS).
Wells finishes 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Centerfielder Autumn Anderson of Wayland (Wayland HS) went 4-of-4 with two runs scored.
Winning pitcher Olivia Vacik of Bollingbrook, Ill. (Neuqua Valley HS), scattered seven hits and one run over 4 2/3 innings. Vacik (1-0) struck out one.
In the second game, Wells delivered the first of two, two-run hits in the first that launched Hope to a 4-0 lead. Third baseman Kelsey Cooper of Romeo (Romeo HS) followed with a two-run double.
Catcher Emma Page of Portage (Portage Central HS) launched a two-run homer to key a three-run second. It was her final regular-season home game.
Winning pitcher Natalie Hiser of Westland (Livonia Churchill HS) allowed four hits and two runs scored over four innings. Hiser (10-5) struck out three and walked one.
Anderson went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Five other Hope players had two hits apiece — Cooper, Page, Wells, shortstop Jenna Maury of Lawton (Lawton HS) and rightfielder Becca Phillips of Wayland (Wayland HS).
