The Hope College men's golf team is tied for fourth place heading into the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship after shooting 3-over-par during the opening 18 holes on Tuesday in Greensboro, N.C.
The Flying Dutchmen shot a team score of 291 at the Grandover Resort & Conference Center West Course to share fourth place with Tyler (Texas). They trail first-place Schreiner University (3-under), Methodist University (2-under) and LaGrange College (2-over).
"Tremendous first round," Hope coach Bob Ebels said. "It was a hot day, got close to 90 degrees. When you're playing well, you don't really notice those things going on. Everybody contributed."
Freshman Winton Munch of Traverse City, Michigan (Central HS), topped the Flying Dutchmen with a 2-under-par 70 that featured four birdies, two bogeys and 12 pars.
Munch, pictured at right, is tied for fifth place — three shots behind individual leader Brian Burt of Hampden-Sydney College.
Junior Ben Lewis of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), is tied for 13th at 1-under. He shot 32 over the final nine holes of his round after recording one eagle, three birdies, one bogey on the West Course's front nine.
Juniors Ben Lanting of Littleton, Colorado (Front Range Christian HS), and Evan Telzerow of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Northern HS), both carded 75s for Hope. They are tied for 62nd.
Junior Collin Breit of Muskegon, Michigan (Western Michigan Christian HS), shot an 85.
The 72-hole, four-day tournament resumes on Wednesday. After 36 holes, the field will be trimmed to the top-15 teams, plus the top-five individuals not playing on one of the top-15 teams.
