Box Score 2 The Hope College softball team finished runner-up in the MIAA Tournament after losing twice to nationally ranked Trine University on Friday in Angola, Indiana.
The second-seeded Flying Dutch lost 11-3 and 8-1 as No. 6 Trine claimed the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Hope closed the season with a 23-16 record.
In the second game, Trine (37-3) scored eight unanswered runs after the Flying Dutch grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Sophomore centerfielder Autumn Anderson of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS), led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from shortstop Jenna Maury of Lawton, Michigan (Lawton HS), and cme home on a single by first baseman Peyton Wells of Rockford, Michigan (Rockford HS). Wells led Hope with two hits.
In the first game, the Flying Dutch received a two-run single from designated player Julie Sobieski from St. Charles, Illinois (East HS), that plated pinchrunner Katrina Ellis of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS), and second baseman Montana Bredeweg of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS).
Leftfielder Becca Phillips of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS), added an RBI single in the seventh that scored rightfielder Sammi Adams of Griffin, Indiana (Griffin HS).
