Flying Dutch Serve Up MIAA Women's Tennis Tournament Title

The Hope College women's tennis team claimed a 5-2 win at Kalamazoo College Friday to win the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament and earn the league's berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The regionally ranked Flying Dutch (16-5 overall) will advance to nationals for the third consecutive season and the ninth time overall.

The Division III national field and Hope's first-round assignment will be announced on Monday, May 5, at 7 p.m., on NCAA.com.

After the match, the Flying Dutch had three players receive All-MIAA recognition and one more be awarded the league's Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award.

Hope clinched the victory when junior Carli Capestany of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS), beat Kelsey Moran 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

Sophomore Claire Cooper of Williamston, Michigan (Williamston HS), defeated Jenna Riehl 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles for the Flying Dutch's first point at singles.

Hope swept doubles play.

Capestany and freshman Nancy Benda of Birmingham, Michigan (Seaholm HS), won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles against Riehl and Sarah Woods.

At No. 2 doubles, Cooper and sophomore Anna Garcia of Battle Creek, Michigan (Lakeview HS), defeated Moran and Olivia Bouchard 8-4.

At No. 3 doubles, senior Mallory Smith of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), and sophomore Marie Holaway of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS), beat Kalamazoo's Ania Latala and Sabrina Dass 8-5.
