The top-ranked Hope College volleyball team swept fourth-ranked Calvin on Saturday in the first of several expected showdowns this season.
The unbeaten Flying Dutch won 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 2,214 to take sole possession of first place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings.
Hope improved to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in MIAA play.
"Everything was very close the entire way," Hope coach
Becky Schmidt said. "I think that having five seniors of this team, that know what they're capable of doing, really came through in some of those pressure points."
Senior Jenna Grasmeyer of Jenison, Michigan (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), led the Flying Dutch with a match-high 14 kills.
Senior Anna Lynch of Lake Odessa, Michigan (Lakewood HS), chipped in nine kills.

Junior Allie Mitchell of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern HS), contributed a match-high 21 digs and a match-high three service aces.
Junior setter
Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport, Michigan (Fruitport HS), totaled a match-high 35 assists while also recording 12 digs and seven kills.
"It was probably one of my most successful matches attacking. It felt good when the first one went down, so I just kept trying," Hazekamp said. "A lot of that success comes from having such dominant hitters all around me. Do the blockers go out to Anna or Jenna, or come back for Amy, or stay on the middles? It opens up a lot of holes for me because they are so focused on our hitters."
Hope beat Calvin at DeVos Fieldhouse for the second consecutive season. Calvin (13-3, 5-1 MIAA) leads the all-time series 54-28.
The Flying Dutch return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they travel to MIAA rival Kalamazoo. Start time is 7 p.m.
